BlackBerry Nation(s)
The President has one, of course.
British high-tech market analysis firm, Canalys, recently reported that just short of 40 million smart phones shipped for sale worldwide in the third quarter of 2008, a 28 percent increase over the same quarter in 2007. In the US, demand doubled. Forty million iPhones, BlackBerrys, Google Androids, and other phones capable of downloading your website. The term “dialup” Internet connection has taken on a new, wireless meaning. Meaning websites now have to display on small screen browsers as well as computer monitors.
But the problem, of course, is that sites built for a computer monitor don’t display too well on a smart phone screen, even the new larger screens. Most corporate websites, such as weather.com, have, of course, moved to building dual sites, one for desktops and laptops and the other for phones, sites that are usually called mobile websites, because smart phones are very mobile, handheld computers that handle phone calls, calendars, instant messaging, web browsers, music, and just about anything you find on the desktop of a computer. Dual sites, such as those for the New York Times or CNN, now often include a link for downloading a “desktop” icon on the phone for quick connection.
So the best advice we give our clients now for moving their sites into the future is to include at least one page built for the small screen. It’s a matter of making your site smarter with a browser detection script; that way your site can tell if it’s being looked at by a computer monitor or a cell phone and display the correct page.
All of which helps the bottomline if your site is accessible from as many portals as possible. More visitors, more business, especially if your potential customers or clients don’t have to go find a hotspot for a laptop to surf to your location on the Web. Of course, they could use the smart phone as a wireless modem to connect a laptop to the Web, but that takes time, and surfing to your URL is much quicker with the push of a few buttons on a smart phone.
